Le rafting commercial a commencé sur le fleuve Zambèze en 1981 et depuis lors, cette activité a gagné en popularité au point qu'un voyage de rafting sur le Zambèze est maintenant un élément régulier dans de nombreux itinéraires touristiques. Des paysages spectaculaires, le soleil, l'eau chaude et de superbes rapides en font l'un des plus grands sites de rafting d'eau vive au monde.
Le fleuve Zambèze est classé comme un fleuve à grand débit, c'est-à-dire qu'il y a peu de roches exposées, ni dans les rapides, ni dans les mares sous les rapides. La distance entre les rapides varie de 100 mètres à 2 km. La rivière descend d'environ 400 pieds sur les 24 km parcourus en rafting d'une journée et la profondeur de la rivière peut atteindre 200 pieds.
