Le Dr David Livingstone a pagayé dans un canot pirogue à travers des rapides en direction du rugissement et des nuages de brume suspendus au-dessus d'une falaise sur laquelle le fleuve Zambèze, large d'un kilomètre, s'est jeté dans son ensemble.
Les pagayeurs de'Makoro' (canoë) l'ont habilement débarqué sur'Goat Island' (maintenant connue sous le nom de Livingstone Island) juste sur le bord du gouffre.
A quelques pas à travers la petite forêt tropicale le 16 novembre 1855, il aperçut l'un des sites les plus spectaculaires du monde -'Mosi-o-Tunya' (la fumée qui gronde) qu'il appela en l'honneur de sa reine les chutes Victoria.

Visits to the island are only during the ‘low water season’, which usually begins in mid-July and goes through to the end of January.
Guest will need to climb in and out of a boat and over rocks on the island.
Swimming in Devil’s Pool is only available between middle of August and end of January (depending on actual water levels)
Special dietary requirements need to be communicated in advance.
Because the island is very popular and has a maximum number of 16 pax at any one time it is advisable to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
